Reviews from professionals

Skin therapist Praktijk voor Huid- en Oedeemtherapie (NL)

As a skin therapist, I am very pleased with ALHYDRAN. We always use it at our practice for surgical scars, burns, radiotherapy, as well as for sensitive and irritated skin. We often use ALHYDRAN for a quicker recovery after a deep peel or laser treatment. As a mother, I always keep a large tube of ALHYDRAN in the fridge. Not because it needs to be stored in the fridge, but because it intensifies relief from itching in the case of insect bites, (very recent) processionary moth irritations, burns (Hello, oven and iron) and I even used it on my son when he had chicken pox. His sores healed in 2 days. An exceptional product, which I think is indispensable in the home.

How does itching occur?

Itching is a signal of danger, much like pain. Itching indicates that something is going on. The natural response is scratching. This way, you can scare away an insect and prevent being bitten or stung. The skin is the only place where you can feel itching.

The development of itching is a complex process. Despite many studies, there is still a lot of uncertainty about it. Most likely, special itch nerves in the skin are stimulated, causing the irritation.

Causes

There are various causes for itching, which can be roughly divided into the following groups:

  • Skin conditions
Almost all skin conditions cause itching. There are also skin diseases that make you more sensitive to itching, such as eczema.
  • External factors
For example, due to insects, plants, medicines or the cold in winter.
  • Systemic or psychological disorders
Jeuk kan het gevolg zijn van andere ziekten. Bijvoorbeeld aan lever, nieren, of door kanker. Of psychiatrische aandoeningen, zoals stress of depressie.

Skin conditions

There are many skin conditions that are associated with itching. The best-known examples are eczema, psoriasis and hives. Inflammatory processes of the skin release proteins that cause itching. These substances are also released when a wound heals. That is why a scar or burn can cause itching.

Many skin conditions also involve dry skin. Dry skin is more sensitive to stimuli and causes more itching. Itchy legs due to dry skin are common.

Medical and cosmetic treatments can also damage the skin and cause itching. For example, after radiotherapy or laser treatment.

From the outside

All kinds of insects can cause itching. Consider, for example, mosquito bites, fleas, dust mites or the stinging hairs of the oak processionary caterpillar.

Plants can cause skin reactions. For example, the poisonous reaction of nettles, an allergic reaction due to ivy or hay fever.

Medicines can cause itching. Many medicines have this listed as a side effect in the package leaflet. But even if it is not mentioned, medicines can cause itching.

Systemic or psychological disorders

Various metabolic diseases and thyroid disorders can cause itching. But also diabetes and certain cancers such as Hodgkin’s lymphoma. However, the connection between the internal disease and the itching is often difficult to investigate and prove.

Itching can also occur in patients who have psychological problems. It often happens after a serious incident. Sometimes there is stress, depression or a psychiatric condition.

When systemic or psychological conditions are the cause of itching, there is often little you can do other than combat the symptoms.

Special ingredient

ALHYDRAN is known for the base of the cream: Fresh Aloe Vera Gel from Aruba, which nourishes and hydrates the skin for a long time. ALHYDRAN Anti Itch Care is an anti-itch cream with a special ingredient:

iCOOL ML provides long-lasting cooling of the skin. It relieves itching and cools the skin. But does not dry out the skin, as menthol or eucalyptus do with long-term use. This non-allergenic variant of Menthyl Lactate is extra gentle for your skin.

The combination of Aloe Vera & iCOOL ML is the ideal solution against itching!

Want to scratch? Resist the temptation!

Because scratching quickly damages your skin. And that actually leads to more irritation of the skin. Avoid getting into this vicious cycle.

But, that is easier said than done. Itchy skin may be the worst feeling of all. That is why you cannot avoid scratching (which only makes it worse). And that is the reason why you sleep so poorly at night.

And that is also why we have made a variant of our cream with proven effectiveness: ALHYDRAN Anti Itch Care.

Practical tips

Itching can be aggravated by everyday things. For example, the weather or how often you shower. We have listed a number of tips for you to reduce itching:

Dry skin is sensitive and itches. You can prevent the skin from drying out:

  • Do not shower, bathe or wash hands too often, not too long and not too hot
  • Use soap less often, it can dry out the skin
  • Dry carefully
  • Use a moisturizing cream
  • Make sure that the air in your house does not become too dry (especially in winter)

It’s easier said than done… But try to avoid scratching. That only makes the itch worse. Your skin becomes even more damaged. Scratching to relieve itching also gives a rewarding feeling, which makes you want to scratch more. This creates a vicious cycle that is difficult to get out of.

Dry skin leads to itching more quickly. That’s why skincare is important. Use a cream that helps repair your dry skin and prevents dehydration. When dehydrated, the skin will produce additional oils and sebum to repair the skin barrier. A good cream helps the skin with this recovery.

Sometimes itching is caused by heat, or heat makes it worse. Sweating can also affect itching. Therefore, you should avoid heat, such as a hot bath or shower.

Cold sends out a signal that (temporarily) suppresses the itching. This means you don’t feel any itching for a while. Cooling the skin with a damp cloth or cold pack has an immediate effect. But be careful: water causes the skin to dry out, which can make the itch worse.

Do you want a good and long-lasting cooling effect?

Choose a cooling anti-itch cream, such as ALHYDRAN Anti Itch Care.

Contact with certain clothing or bedding can promote the complaints. This could be because you have an allergic reaction. But it is more likely that the irritation is caused by contact and friction with the fabric. For example, textiles have a short fibre, which (normally unnoticed) rubs against the skin. If you are already itchy, this can make it worse.

Wear clothing that does not irritate your skin.

Clothing made of fibres that are smooth and soft, so the fabric on the skin does not chafe, rub or sting.
